Artist's Description

The Doge's Palace is one of the main landmarks of the city of Venice in northern Italy. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the former Republic of Venice. During the 13th and 14th centuries the entire ground floor of the southern wing was turned into a prison. Due to the dark, damp and isolated qualities of they came to be known as the Pozzi (the Wells).
